Our take on the DeWalt ATOMIC 20V MAX 1/2 in. Impact Wrench with DeWalt 20V MAX XR POWERSTACK 5Ah Battery

The DeWalt ATOMIC 20V MAX 1/2 in. Impact Wrench is a compact cordless impact wrench rated at 330 ft-lb of fastening torque, sold here bundled with a 20V MAX XR POWERSTACK 5Ah battery. It is aimed at mechanics and DIYers who want a short, light tool for lug nuts, suspension bolts and general assembly work rather than a full-size high-torque gun. The ATOMIC line trades peak torque for a smaller body, so it fits where a larger 1/2 in. wrench will not.

Best forHome mechanics doing tire rotations and brake work
Working in tight engine bays and wheel wells
Buyers who want a spare POWERSTACK battery for other 20V MAX tools
Light professional and farm or trailer maintenance
Pros
  • Compact, short body reaches tight spaces
  • 330 ft-lb handles most passenger-car lug nuts
  • 1/2 in. anvil takes standard impact sockets
  • POWERSTACK 5Ah battery is light and charges fast
  • Shares DeWalt 20V MAX batteries with other tools
Cons
  • 330 ft-lb is below full-size high-torque wrenches
  • Not enough for stubborn heavy-truck or rusted bolts
  • Bare-tool weight rises with the 5Ah pack
  • No friction ring option listed; pin detent only

What reviewers say

Owners of the ATOMIC impact wrench generally praise its size and power for the money, calling it a strong step up from a 3/8 in. compact. The common complaint is that it runs out of torque on heavily rusted or oversized fasteners, where a high-torque model is needed.

Pros
  • Fits into spaces larger impact wrenches cannot
  • Removes most car lug nuts without straining
  • Light and well balanced with the POWERSTACK pack
  • Good value as a kit with a 5Ah battery
Cons
  • Stalls on rusted or over-torqued bolts
  • Less torque than full-size 1/2 in. models
  • Battery adds bulk to an otherwise compact tool

Questions and answers

Is 330 ft-lb enough for car lug nuts?
Yes for most passenger cars and light SUVs, whose lug nuts are typically torqued to 80-150 ft-lb. Heavily rusted or over-tightened nuts may still need a breaker bar or a high-torque wrench.
How does it compare to DeWalt's high-torque 1/2 in. impact wrench?
The high-torque model delivers well over 1,000 ft-lb but is much larger and heavier. The ATOMIC is the better pick when access and weight matter more than maximum breakaway torque.
What comes in the box?
The listing pairs the ATOMIC 1/2 in. impact wrench with one DeWalt 20V MAX XR POWERSTACK 5Ah battery. Check the listing for whether a charger and bag are included, since kit contents vary.
Does the battery work with other DeWalt tools?
Yes. The 20V MAX XR POWERSTACK 5Ah battery fits DeWalt 20V MAX tools and chargers, so it doubles as a spare pack for drills, drivers and saws.
What size sockets does it take?
It has a 1/2 in. square drive, so it uses standard 1/2 in. impact-rated sockets. Do not use chrome hand sockets, which can crack under impact load.
When is the best time to buy it?
DeWalt kits usually drop during holiday sales and spring tool events. Watch the price history and buy when the kit falls below its recent average.
