Our take on the DeWalt ATOMIC 20V MAX Brushless 1/2" Hammer Drill with POWERSTACK Battery Kit

The DeWalt ATOMIC 20V MAX is a compact brushless hammer drill with a 1/2-inch chuck, sold as a kit with a POWERSTACK battery. Its short body fits between studs and into tight overhead spots where full-size drills won't go, and the hammer mode adds light masonry drilling. The brushless motor and POWERSTACK pack are the main upgrades over older brushed compact drills. Its price has held at $169 at the one store tracked, so there is no cheaper day to wait for.

Best forHomeowners and DIYers who want one drill for wood, metal and light masonry
Electricians and installers working in tight spaces
Buyers who want a compact drill with a newer high-output battery
Anyone already on the DeWalt 20V MAX battery platform
Pros
  • Brushless motor runs cooler and lasts longer than brushed versions
  • Short ATOMIC body reaches into cabinets and between studs
  • 1/2-inch chuck takes standard bits and hole saws
  • Hammer mode handles brick and block for small anchors
  • POWERSTACK battery is lighter and delivers more current than a standard 2.0Ah pack
  • Kit includes battery and charger, so it is ready to use
Cons
  • Compact size means less torque than DeWalt's full-size hammer drills
  • Single-battery kit; a second pack costs extra
  • Hammer mode is for light masonry only, not concrete drilling all day
  • No hard case in most kits

What reviewers say

Owners of the ATOMIC line generally rate the compact brushless drills highly for size and power, and the POWERSTACK battery draws praise for runtime. The common complaints are the price of extra batteries and the limits of hammer mode on hard concrete.

Questions and answers

Is the DeWalt ATOMIC hammer drill worth it?
Yes for most home and trade users who want a compact drill that still drives screws and drills masonry anchors. If you drill concrete regularly, step up to a full-size SDS or hammer drill.
How does it compare to the DeWalt DCD805 or full-size hammer drills?
The ATOMIC is shorter and lighter but gives up some torque. Full-size 20V hammer drills drill larger holes in concrete faster and cost more.
What is in the kit?
The kit includes the drill, a 20V MAX POWERSTACK battery and a charger. Confirm whether a bag or case is included before buying.
Does it work with other DeWalt 20V MAX batteries?
Yes. It runs on any DeWalt 20V MAX battery, so older packs work, though runtime and weight differ from the POWERSTACK.
Is the price likely to drop?
The tracked price has stayed at $169, so there is no recent lower point to wait for. DeWalt kits usually discount around major holiday sales.
