Our take on the DeWalt ATOMIC 20V MAX Cordless 2-Tool Combo Kit with Angle Grinder

The DeWalt ATOMIC 20V MAX 2-Tool Combo Kit pairs a compact brushless drill/driver with a 4-1/2-inch angle grinder, both running on DeWalt's 20V MAX lithium-ion batteries. The ATOMIC line is built for tight spaces: shorter tool bodies than DeWalt's full-size 20V tools, with brushless motors for longer runtime. The kit ships with two batteries and a charger, so both tools can be used without buying extras. It suits buyers who want one battery platform for drilling and cutting or grinding metal.

Best forHomeowners and DIYers who want two core tools on one battery platformMetalwork and fabrication jobs that need cutting and grinding plus drillingWork in tight spaces where compact tool bodies matterBuyers already on DeWalt 20V MAX batteries
Pros
  • Brushless motors on both tools for more runtime per charge
  • Compact ATOMIC bodies fit into tight spots
  • Two batteries included, so one can charge while the other works
  • Shares DeWalt's 20V MAX battery platform with a wide range of tools
  • Angle grinder covers cutting, grinding and wire-brush work with the right wheels
Cons
  • Not DeWalt's top-power tier; full-size 20V tools deliver more torque
  • Grinder is a 4-1/2-inch model, not a larger 5- or 6-inch grinder
  • Kit batteries are usually compact, not high-capacity XR packs
  • No case or extra accessories beyond the basics in most versions

What reviewers say

Owners of DeWalt ATOMIC tools generally report solid build quality and good power for the size, and combo kits are popular as a first step into the 20V MAX line. The grinder draws the most mixed comments, mainly about battery drain under heavy cutting.

Pros
  • Compact size and light weight for overhead and tight-space work
  • Brushless motors hold up well and run cool
  • Battery compatibility across the DeWalt 20V MAX range
  • Good value when bought as a kit rather than separately
Cons
  • Grinder drains compact batteries quickly under continuous load
  • Less torque than full-size DeWalt drill/drivers
  • Some kits ship without a carrying case
  • Grinder guard and handle can feel basic

Questions and answers

Is this kit worth it over buying the drill and grinder separately?
Usually yes. Combo kits typically cost less than the two bare tools plus two batteries and a charger bought separately, and you get matched batteries for both tools.
How does the ATOMIC drill compare with DeWalt's full-size 20V drill?
The ATOMIC is shorter and lighter, which helps in tight spaces, but the full-size drill delivers more torque for heavy hole sawing and large auger bits. For most home and light trade work the ATOMIC is enough.
How long do the batteries last when using the grinder?
Expect short runtime under continuous heavy cutting with the compact batteries in the kit; light grinding and cut-off work lasts longer. For long grinding sessions, a higher-capacity 20V MAX pack is the better match.
What size wheels does the angle grinder take?
It is a 4-1/2-inch grinder, the most common size for cut-off and grinding wheels in the US. It uses a 5/8-11 spindle, so standard wheels and wire brushes fit.
What comes in the box?
Typically the drill/driver, the 4-1/2-inch angle grinder, two 20V MAX lithium-ion batteries, a charger and a contractor bag. Check the specific kit listing, since bundles vary.
When is the best time to buy this kit?
DeWalt combo kits see the deepest discounts around Black Friday, Father's Day and other holiday sales. Prices also dip when a kit is being replaced by a newer bundle.
