Our take on the Diatomaceous Earth Swimming Pool Filter Media, 25 lb

This is a 25 lb bag of diatomaceous earth (DE) powder used as filter media in DE-style swimming pool filters. DE coats the filter grids and traps particles down to a few microns, finer than sand filters manage. A 25 lb bag covers a typical backwash-and-recharge cycle several times over, so it lasts most of a season for a standard-size pool. No price was provided for this listing, so check current store pricing before buying.

Pros
  • Filters particles down to roughly 3 to 5 microns, finer than sand
  • One 25 lb bag lasts multiple recharges for most residential pools
  • Works with standard DE-grid filters from major brands
  • Simple to add through the skimmer after backwashing
Cons
  • DE powder is a respiratory irritant; wear a mask when handling
  • Must be recharged after every backwash, unlike sand or cartridge media
  • Bag is heavy and messy to pour
  • Not for sand or cartridge filters

Questions and answers

How much DE do I add to my filter?
Most residential DE filters take about 4 to 6 lb per charge, depending on filter size. Check your filter's label or manual for the exact amount, then add it slowly through the skimmer.
How many charges does a 25 lb bag give?
At roughly 5 lb per charge, a 25 lb bag covers about five recharges. That is usually enough for a full season with regular backwashing.
Is this safe to handle?
DE is a fine powder and a respiratory irritant. Wear a dust mask, avoid windy conditions, and keep it away from children and pets while pouring.
Will it work in my sand filter?
No. This is media for DE-grid filters only. Sand filters need pool sand, and cartridge filters need no media at all.
When is the best time to buy?
DE media prices are usually lowest in early spring before pool season and during end-of-season clearance. Buying a 25 lb bag in bulk is cheaper per pound than small bags.
