Our take on the Donner DED-200X Electronic Drum Set

The Donner DED-200X is a beginner electronic drum kit with eight pads, a sturdy rack, and a sound module with built-in kits and practice tools. It stands out for its low price and quiet mesh heads, which suit apartment practice. The latest best price is $299 at Donner as of November 3, near the low end of its recent $279 to $349 range.

Best forFirst-time drummers on a tight budgetApartment players who need quiet practiceParents buying a starter kit for a teenGuitarists and producers who want basic MIDI drum input
Pros
  • Mesh heads on the snare and toms feel closer to acoustic drums than rubber pads
  • Quiet enough for apartment practice, especially with headphones
  • Sound module includes multiple kits, metronome, and practice songs
  • USB-MIDI out lets you record into a DAW
  • Rack and pads assemble without tools in about 30 minutes
Cons
  • Cymbal pads are rubber and feel stiff compared with mesh
  • Kick pad is small and the included pedal is basic
  • Onboard sounds are serviceable but not studio-grade
  • No hi-hat stand or real hi-hat pedal; the hi-hat is a pad and a footswitch

Questions and answers

Is the Donner DED-200X worth it for a beginner?
Yes, if you want a quiet, low-cost kit to learn on. It covers the basics well, but plan to upgrade the kick pedal and cymbals if you stick with drumming.
How does it compare with the Alesis Nitro Mesh?
Both are beginner mesh kits in the same price class. The Nitro Mesh has a better-known module and a real hi-hat pedal setup, while the DED-200X often sells for less.
Can I use headphones with it?
Yes. There is a headphone jack on the module, so you can practice silently without disturbing neighbors.
Does it work with a DAW or drum software?
Yes. The module sends MIDI over USB, so you can trigger software drums in a DAW on a computer.
What is in the box?
The box includes the rack, eight pads, sound module, kick pedal, drumsticks, cables, and power supply. A drum throne and headphones are not included.
When is it cheapest?
It has sold between $279 and $349 recently. The $299 price at Donner as of November 3 is close to the low end, and holiday sales are the best time to watch for drops.
What do buyers say about the Donner DED-200X Electronic Drum Set?
Rated 4.3 out of 5 from 19 ratings.
