Our take on the Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS800 4K PRO-UHD Ultra Short-Throw Laser Projector

The Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS800 is an ultra short-throw laser projector that sits inches from the wall and throws an 80- to 150-inch 4K image. Its 4,000-lumen output is bright enough for a living room with some ambient light, and a built-in Yamaha soundbar means no separate speaker is needed for basic use. Android TV with Google Assistant is built in, so streaming apps run without a stick. Its latest best price is $2,999 at ProjectorScreen.com as of November 3, near the low end of its recent range.

Best forLiving rooms with a wall or screen 80–150 inches wideBuyers who want a big 4K picture without ceiling mountingCasual daytime viewing where brightness mattersStreaming-first setups that want built-in apps and sound
Pros
  • 4,000 lumens handles moderate room light better than most UST projectors
  • 0.16:1 throw puts a 100-inch image about a foot from the wall
  • Laser light source rated around 20,000 hours, no lamp swaps
  • Built-in Yamaha soundbar covers everyday audio
  • Android TV and Google Assistant built in
  • Native 3840x2160 with 10-bit color processing
Cons
  • LCD panel, not DLP or LCOS; black levels are only average
  • No Netflix app preinstalled on Android TV; needs a workaround or stick
  • Large, heavy chassis that needs a wide, stable surface
  • Ultra short-throw setups need careful alignment and a flat wall or ALR screen
  • Built-in sound is fine for casual use but limited for a dedicated theater

Questions and answers

Is the LS800 worth it over a cheaper long-throw projector?
If you want a 100-inch-plus image without ceiling mounting or a dark room, the ultra short-throw design and 4,000 lumens justify the price. A long-throw projector costs less but needs mounting, cable runs and more light control.
How far from the wall does it need to sit?
About 0.9 feet for an 80-inch image and roughly 1.8 feet for 150 inches, thanks to the 0.16:1 throw ratio. The surface must be flat, and an ALR screen helps in bright rooms.
Does it have Netflix built in?
No. Android TV on this model does not ship with the Netflix app, so most owners use a streaming stick or cast from another device.
How long does the laser last?
Epson rates the laser light source at about 20,000 hours, which is roughly a decade of heavy daily use. There is no lamp to replace.
What is in the box?
The projector, power cable, remote and basic documentation. A screen, stand and HDMI cables are not included.
When is it cheapest?
It has sold around $2,999 at ProjectorScreen.com as of November 3, near the bottom of its recent range. Holiday sales and bundle deals with screens are the usual times to watch for lower prices.
