Our take on the Ernie Ball 2732 Slinky Cobalt Electric Bass Strings

Ernie Ball Slinky Cobalt bass strings are a 50-70-85-105 light-gauge set wound from a cobalt-iron alloy rather than the usual nickel-plated steel. Ernie Ball says the alloy gives a stronger magnetic pull to the pickups, which it credits for more output, a wider dynamic range and stronger lows and highs. The strings are roundwound on a steel core and feel softer under the fingers than nickel sets. The best new price is $31.99 at Amazon as of November 7, 2026, with 8 stores listing the set new.

Questions and answers

Are Cobalt Slinkys worth the extra cost over regular Slinkys?: If you want more output and a brighter, more aggressive tone, the upgrade is audible. If you prefer a warm, vintage sound, standard nickel Slinkys cost less and may suit you better.
What gauges are in this set?: It is a light-gauge four-string set: 50, 70, 85 and 105. That fits standard tuning on most four-string basses.
Will these fit my bass?: They fit most four-string electric basses with standard-scale length. Check your bass's scale length and bridge before buying if it is short-scale or extended-scale.
How do Cobalt strings differ from nickel-plated steel?: The winding is a cobalt-iron alloy, which Ernie Ball says gives a stronger magnetic response for more output and a wider dynamic range. Expect a brighter, louder tone than nickel.
How often should I change them?: Most players change bass strings every few months depending on play time and sweat. Cobalt sets can lose their bright edge sooner, so change them when the tone dulls.
Is $31.99 a good price?: It is the best new price among 8 stores as of November 7, 2026. Cobalt sets typically sell above standard Slinkys, so it is a fair street price.
Where is the Ernie Ball 2732 Slinky Cobalt Electric Bass Strings cheapest?: At Amazon, for $31.99, 20% under what the other stores charge, as of our latest check.
Where can I buy the Ernie Ball 2732 Slinky Cobalt Electric Bass Strings?: 7 stores we checked sell it, including Guitar Center, Musician's Friend, Sweetwater, Target, Amazon.
