Is a retractable leash safe for a large dog?

It can be, if the dog is trained not to bolt and you keep the leash locked short near roads and other people. The 26 ft tape gives a big dog room, but a hard lunge can burn your hand or snap the tape.

How much does the Flexi New Classic hold?

Flexi rates the large size for dogs up to about 110 lb. That suits most Labs, shepherds and similar breeds, but not dogs that pull hard without training.

Does the LED need batteries?

Yes, the handle light runs on small button-cell batteries. They last through many evening walks, and the light is a visibility aid, not a headlamp.

Can I replace the tape if it breaks?

Yes, Flexi sells replacement tape cassettes for the New Classic line. Match the cassette to the large 26 ft size, and reel it in slowly the first time.

Retractable leashes tend to dip during spring pet events and Black Friday sales. Check the price history before buying, since list prices vary by store.

Our take on the Flexi New Classic Retractable Dog Leash, Large, 26 ft, Tape

The Flexi New Classic is a retractable tape leash for large dogs, with a 26 ft cord housed in a hard plastic handle. It has a built-in LED light in the handle for evening walks and a one-button brake and lock. It suits dogs up to about 110 lb, so it is aimed at big, strong pullers rather than small breeds.
