Our take on the Futonland Japanese Shikibuton Floor Mattress

A handcrafted Japanese-style shikibuton filled with natural cotton and virgin New Zealand wool, sized up to California King (84 by 76 in). It is medium-firm, hypoallergenic and made for floor sleeping or as a low seating surface. No foundation is included, so it lies directly on the floor or a tatami mat. It is a specialty natural-fiber mattress, not a conventional innerspring or foam bed.

Best forFloor sleepers who want a firm, natural-fiber bedPeople with allergies or chemical sensitivitiesGuest rooms and small apartmentsMinimalist bedrooms and tatami setups

Questions and answers

Is a shikibuton comfortable for side sleepers?
It is medium-firm and thin, so side sleepers often feel pressure at the shoulder and hip. Back and stomach sleepers usually adapt better. Side sleepers may want a topper.
How often should I rotate it?
Rotate it regularly, roughly every few weeks, and flip it when possible. Airing it in dry weather helps the cotton and wool fill stay fresh and slows compression.
Does it need a frame or foundation?
No foundation is included. It is designed to lie on the floor or a tatami mat. Use it on a dry, flat surface and air it to prevent moisture buildup.
What sizes are available?
Listings include sizes up to California King, 84 by 76 in. Check the specific size before ordering, since fill weight and price scale with size.
Is it good for allergies?
The cotton cover and hypoallergenic cotton-wool fill avoid synthetic foams. Still, any fabric bedding can collect dust mites, so air it and keep it dry.
How do I clean it?
The cotton cover is not removable for machine washing in most builds. Spot clean and air it regularly. A washable cover or sheet protects it.
