Is the Edge 840 Solar worth it over the non-solar Edge 840?

The solar model costs more and mainly adds trickle charging in direct sunlight, which reviewers call underwhelming. If you rarely ride in strong sun, the standard Edge 840 gives the same navigation and training features for less.

How does it compare with the Edge 1040 Solar?

The 1040 has a larger screen and longer battery life but is bigger and heavier. The 840 Solar is more compact with the same multi-band GNSS and coaching features, which suits riders who want a smaller unit.

How long does the battery actually last?

Garmin rates it up to 26 hours in demanding use, or 32 with solar in direct sunlight, and up to 42 hours in battery saver mode, or 60 with solar. Solar adds up to 25 minutes per hour in battery saver mode on daytime rides.

Does it work with power meters and heart rate monitors?

Yes. It pairs with ANT+ and Bluetooth sensors, including power meters and heart rate monitors, and uses them for adaptive coaching and daily suggested workouts.

The box includes the Edge 840 Solar unit, a standard mount, an out-front mount, a USB cable and documentation. Sensors such as a heart rate strap or power meter are sold separately.
