Does the Vivosmart 5 have built-in GPS?

No. It uses connected GPS through your phone for outdoor distance and pace, so you need to carry the phone on walks and runs.

Yes. It is rated 5 ATM, which covers swimming and showers. It tracks activity but has no open-water swim mode with GPS.

How long does the battery last?

Our take on the Garmin Vivosmart 5

The Vivosmart 5 is Garmin's screen-and-band fitness tracker: a small OLED touchscreen on a soft silicone band that counts steps, tracks heart rate around the clock, monitors sleep and pairs with your phone for notifications. It has no built-in GPS, so outdoor walks and runs borrow your phone's location through connected GPS, and it lacks an altimeter, NFC payments and a barometer. It is rated 5 ATM for swimming and showers. The best new price is $139.99 at Best Buy as of November 5, 2026, at the top of its recent range; five stores list it new, so compare before buying.
