Is the Gränsfors Splitting Axe Long Handle 445 worth it?

If you split firewood regularly by hand and value a forged head with good geometry, yes. For occasional splitting or heavy knotty hardwood, a cheaper maul may be the better spend.

How does it differ from the standard Gränsfors splitting axe?

The 445 has the longer 80 cm handle, which adds leverage and reach over the shorter version. The head is the same 3 1/2 lb splitting design.

Can it handle large, knotty rounds?

It splits straight-grained and mixed firewood well. For big knotty hardwood, a heavier maul or wedges are more effective.

What is included in the box?

The axe comes with a leather sheath. Check the listing for any additional packaging or sharpening items.

How should I care for the hickory handle?

Oil the handle occasionally with linseed or a similar wood oil and store the axe dry. Avoid leaving it out in rain or sun.

When is the price lowest?

Gränsfors prices move little, but watch for seasonal sales and compare stores. Check the price history on this page before buying.

Our take on the Gränsfors Splitting Axe Long Handle 445

The Gränsfors Splitting Axe Long Handle 445 is a Swedish forged splitting axe with an 80 cm hickory handle and a 3 1/2 lb head, 5 lb total. Its thin, concave bit bites deep, then the broader head section wedges the wood apart. The long straight handle adds swing speed and reach, so it suits splitting on a block or low ground. It is a premium hand-forged tool, priced well above hardware-store mauls; check the current listing for the latest price against its recent range.
