Is Special Dark actually dark chocolate?

It is a mildly sweet dark chocolate, sweeter and less bitter than most dark bars. Hershey's does not state a cocoa percentage on the bag, so treat it as a mild dark chocolate rather than a high-cacao one.

How many pieces are in a one-pound bag?

About 95 individually wrapped Kisses per pound. Counts can vary slightly by bag.

Is it suitable for vegans or dairy-free diets?

No. Special Dark contains milk fat, so it is not vegan or dairy-free. Check the allergen line on the bag if you are avoiding milk.

Can I use them for baking?

Yes. They melt well for drizzling and work as a topping on cookies, cakes and desserts. The mild flavor keeps them from overpowering other ingredients.

How should I store them?

Keep the bag sealed in a cool, dry place away from heat and sunlight. The individual wrappers help the pieces stay fresh after the bag is opened.

When is the best time to buy?

Prices tend to drop around Halloween, Valentine's Day and Easter, and large bags are often cheapest at club stores and big-box retailers.

Our take on the Hershey's Kisses Special Dark Mildly Sweet Chocolate

Hershey's Kisses Special Dark are individually wrapped dark chocolate drops in the classic teardrop shape, sold in a one-pound bag of about 95 pieces. Special Dark is a mildly sweet dark chocolate, sweeter and less bitter than most 60%+ dark bars, which makes it easy to snack on straight from the wrapper. The dark purple foil makes the bag work for candy bowls, party favors and gift bags. It is a mainstream grocery item, so it is usually cheapest at large retailers and club stores rather than specialty candy shops.
