Our take on the Holbein Artist Colored Pencil Set of 12

The Holbein Artist Colored Pencil Set of 12 is a pastel-toned set of oil-and-wax hybrid pencils aimed at artists who want soft, blendable color with a pigmented core. The medium-hard to soft lead works on any paper and can be combined with watercolor for mixed-media illustration. It is AP certified and conforms to ASTM-D4236, so it is safe for adult and student use. The set is a compact 12-color starter rather than a full palette, so check whether the pastel range covers the colors you actually use before buying.

Questions and answers

Is the Holbein 12 set worth it?
For pastel-focused illustration, yes. The pigmented hybrid core blends well and holds up over watercolor, though the 12-color range is limited for the price.
How does it compare with Polychromos or Prismacolor?
Holbein cores are softer and more blendable than Faber-Castell Polychromos, and firmer than Prismacolor Premier. That makes them a middle ground good for layering without crumbling.
Can these pencils be used with watercolor?
Yes. The oil-and-wax core is designed to work alongside watercolor, so you can draw over washes or add pencil detail to painted areas.
Are Holbein colored pencils safe for adults and students?
Yes. The set is AP certified and conforms to ASTM-D4236, the standard for art materials safety.
What is in the box?
The set contains 12 pastel-colored pencils in a compact case. No sharpener or extra accessories are included.
When is the price lowest?
Art supply sets like this tend to dip during back-to-school and holiday sales. Check the price history before buying to see whether the current price is near its low.
What do buyers say about the Holbein Artist Colored Pencil Set of 12?
Rated 5 out of 5 from 70 ratings.
