Our take on the JBL Xtreme 3 Portable Bluetooth Speaker with Case

The JBL Xtreme 3 is a large portable Bluetooth speaker built for loud outdoor sound. It pairs two woofers and two tweeters with dual passive radiators, and it is IP67 dustproof and waterproof. JBL rates battery life at up to 15 hours, and the speaker can charge other devices from its USB port. It is bulky at 11.75 inches wide and weighs about 4.3 pounds, so it suits a backpack or car trunk more than a pocket.

Questions and answers

Is the JBL Xtreme 3 worth it over the Xtreme 2?
Yes, if you want better water and dust protection and longer rated battery life. The Xtreme 3 is IP67 versus IPX7 on the Xtreme 2, and JBL rates it at 15 hours instead of 15 with a smaller battery. Sound is similar, so a discounted Xtreme 2 is still a reasonable buy.
How does it compare with the JBL Charge 5?
The Xtreme 3 is bigger, louder and has more bass, with a shoulder strap and a case. The Charge 5 is easier to carry and cheaper. Choose the Xtreme 3 for group outdoor use and the Charge 5 for portability.
Can I charge my phone from it?
Yes. The USB-A port works as a power bank, so you can top up a phone from the speaker's battery. Expect that to cut into the speaker's own playtime.
Is it really waterproof?
It carries an IP67 rating, meaning it is dust-tight and can survive being submerged in about a meter of water for 30 minutes. JBL still advises drying the port cover before charging.
What comes in the box?
The speaker, a shoulder strap, a USB-C charging cable and a power adapter. The listing here also includes a carrying case.
When is it cheapest?
Prices on this model tend to drop around major sales events and when a successor launches. Check the price history on this page before buying.
