Our take on the JC Whitney 1998 Toyota 4Runner SR5 18.5 gallons / 70 liters Fuel Tank

This is a stock-replacement fuel tank for 1996-2000 Toyota 4Runners, sized at 18.5 gallons (70 liters) to match the factory tank. It is galvanized steel with a powder-coated, painted finish for corrosion resistance, and it fits gas models only. At $244.99 at CarParts.com as of November 3, 2026, it sits at the low end of what new tanks for this truck cost; four stores carry it new.

Best for1996-2000 4Runner owners with a leaking or rusted-out original tankDIYers replacing a tank themselves rather than paying a shopRestoring a truck that needs a factory-fit tank, not a custom cell
Pros
  • Direct stock replacement, so factory straps and sending unit should line up
  • Galvanized steel with powder coat and paint for rust resistance
  • Correct 18.5-gallon capacity for the 1996-2000 4Runner
  • Lowest new price of the four stores at $244.99
Cons
  • Gas only; not for any diesel swap
  • Steel is heavier and rusts faster than plastic if the coating chips
  • No fuel pump or sending unit included
  • Only fits 1996-2000 4Runner, not other Toyota SUVs

What reviewers say

The 4.9-out-of-5 rating comes from a small pool of 17 ratings, so treat it as a signal rather than proof. Buyers of stock replacement tanks for this era of 4Runner generally report good fit and no leaks when the tank is installed with new straps and a fresh sending unit.

Pros
  • Fits the factory location without modification
  • Holds up well against rust in salty climates
  • Correct capacity and shape for the 1996-2000 body
Cons
  • Small number of ratings makes the score less reliable
  • Paint can scuff during shipping and needs touch-up
  • Installation is labor-heavy, which some buyers underestimate

Questions and answers

Is this tank worth it over a used one?
Yes for most buyers. A used 4Runner tank from this era is usually already rusting inside, and $244.99 new at CarParts.com as of November 3, 2026 is close to what a clean used tank costs.
Does it fit my 1999 4Runner SR5?
Yes. It is listed for 1996-2000 4Runner gas models, which covers the SR5. It does not fit other Toyota SUVs.
What else do I need to install it?
Plan on new fuel tank straps, a new sending unit or fuel pump assembly, and new filler and vent hoses. The tank itself ships bare, with no hardware.
Is steel or plastic better here?
Steel matches the factory tank and is fine if the coating stays intact. Plastic resists rust better but is not a stock replacement for this truck.
When is the price lowest?
Tank prices move little, but check around fall and winter when repair demand drops. The current $244.99 at CarParts.com is already the lowest of four stores.
Will it work with a diesel conversion?
No. It is listed for gas only, so a diesel swap needs a different tank.
Where is the JC Whitney 1998 Toyota 4Runner SR5 18.5 gallons / 70 liters Fuel Tank cheapest?
