Our take on the Johns Manville R-19 Kraft Faced Fiberglass Insulation Roll, 15 in x 39 ft 2 in

This is a 6-1/2 inch thick fiberglass insulation roll with a kraft paper vapor retarder on one face. At R-19 it suits 2x6 exterior walls, floors over crawl spaces and some ceiling cavities. The roll covers about 75 square feet at 23 inches wide and 39 feet 2 inches long, and weighs about 21 pounds. The best new price is $53.78 at The Home Depot as of November 4, 2026, and only one store lists it new, so there is no recent price range to compare against.

Best for2x6 exterior wall cavitiesFloors above unheated crawl spacesRetrofit and new-build projectsDIY installers insulating a small area
Pros
  • R-19 in a 6-1/2 inch thickness fits standard 2x6 framing
  • Kraft facing acts as a vapor retarder, so no separate barrier is needed on walls
  • Formaldehyde-free binder
  • One roll covers about 75 square feet, enough for a short wall run
  • Light at about 21 pounds and easy to cut with a utility knife
Cons
  • Only one store lists it new, so price competition is thin
  • Kraft facing must face the warm, interior side; wrong-side installs trap moisture
  • Fiberglass needs gloves, eye protection and a mask to install
  • Compressing the roll lowers its R-value
  • Not for exposed or high-moisture areas without a covering

What reviewers say

Fiberglass rolls like this are widely described as straightforward to install and true to their labeled R-value when left uncompressed. Common complaints are itchiness during handling and kraft facing that tears if pulled too tight.

Pros
  • Cuts easily to fit between studs
  • Holds its shape in wall cavities
  • Facing staples down cleanly
Cons
  • Itchy on bare skin
  • Facing tears when stretched
  • Rolls can arrive compressed at the edges

Questions and answers

Is R-19 enough for a 2x6 wall?
R-19 is the common choice for 2x6 exterior walls in moderate climates. Colder zones often call for R-21 or higher, so check your local code.
Which way should the kraft facing go?
The facing goes toward the warm, interior side of the wall. In cold climates that means facing the heated room, with the fiberglass against the exterior sheathing.
How much area does one roll cover?
About 75 square feet at 23 inches wide and 39 feet 2 inches long. Divide your wall area by 75 to get the number of rolls.
Can I use it in a ceiling or floor?
Yes. It works in floors above crawl spaces and in some ceiling cavities, but the facing still needs to sit on the warm side and be covered where code requires.
Does it need a separate vapor barrier?
No. The kraft facing is the vapor retarder, so a second barrier on the same wall can trap moisture.
When is it cheapest?
Insulation tends to be discounted in spring and fall and during store insulation promotions. At $53.78 at The Home Depot as of November 4, 2026, only one store lists it new, so watch that listing.
Where is the Johns Manville R-19 Kraft Faced Fiberglass Insulation Roll, 15 in x 39 ft 2 in cheapest?
