Our take on the KEEN Zionic Waterproof Boots Kids

The KEEN Zionic Waterproof Boots are over-the-ankle kids' hiking boots with a KEEN.DRY waterproof, breathable membrane, a waterproof leather and textile upper, and a bungee-lace closure kids can pull on themselves. A high-rebound foam midsole and nonmarking rubber outsole handle trails and school floors alike. They suit kids who hike, splash through puddles, or need one shoe for wet fall and winter days.

Pros
  • KEEN.DRY membrane keeps feet dry and still breathes
  • Bungee laces tighten fast without tying
  • High-rebound foam midsole cushions long walks
  • Nonmarking outsole is safe on gym and indoor floors
  • Over-the-ankle height keeps debris and splash out
Cons
  • Bungee lacing gives less fine-tuned fit than standard laces
  • Waterproof leather and membrane add weight versus mesh sneakers
  • Over-the-ankle cut can feel stiff until broken in
  • Not a deep-winter snow boot; insulation is limited

Questions and answers

Are the KEEN Zionic Waterproof Boots actually waterproof?
Yes. They use a KEEN.DRY waterproof, breathable membrane under a waterproof leather and textile upper, so puddles and wet grass stay out while sweat vapor escapes. They are not designed for standing in deep water.
How do kids put them on?
The bungee lace closure lets kids loosen the cord, slide their foot in, and pull it tight without tying knots. It is quicker than standard laces but offers less precise fit adjustment.
Can kids wear them to school?
Yes. The nonmarking rubber outsole won't scuff gym floors, and the over-the-ankle height works for recess and wet walks. They are heavier than low sneakers, so some kids may prefer a lighter shoe for all-day indoor wear.
Are they warm enough for winter?
They handle cold rain, slush and light snow, but they are not insulated snow boots. For deep cold or long time in snow, look for a dedicated insulated winter boot.
How does the Zionic compare with KEEN's Targhee kids' boot?
Both are waterproof hiking boots. The Zionic uses a bungee lace and high-rebound foam midsole for easy on-off and a springier feel, while the Targhee line is a longer-standing trail design with traditional lacing.
When is the best time to buy them?
Kids' boots tend to drop in price at end of season and during back-to-school sales. Check the price history on this page to see whether the current price is near its low.
