Our take on the Kenwood CMOS-230LP Universal Backup Camera

The Kenwood CMOS-230LP is a wired, license-plate-mount backup camera with a 128° wide-angle lens and a 1280 x 720 CMOS sensor at 30fps. It is waterproof, has an adjustable camera angle, and weighs 21 g. At $119 at Abt Electronics & Appliances as of November 7, 2026, it sits at the top of its recent range, so it is not a bargain right now.

Best forDrivers adding a rear camera to a Kenwood head unitCars with a flat license-plate areaParking and reversing in tight spotsOwners who want a wired, always-on feed

Pros

128° horizontal view covers a wide area behind the car
720p at 30fps is sharp enough for parking lines and obstacles
Waterproof housing handles rain, wash cycles and road spray
License-plate mount fits most cars without drilling the body
Adjustable angle lets you aim the view after mounting
Small and light at 21 g, so it does not stress the plate bracket

Cons

Wired install means routing a cable from the plate to the cabin
No night vision rating, so low-light performance depends on reverse lights
720p, not 1080p, so detail fades at longer distances
Needs a compatible display or head unit; not a standalone screen
At $119 it is at the high end of its recent price range

Questions and answers

Does the Kenwood CMOS-230LP work with any car stereo?: It outputs a standard video signal, but it needs a display or head unit with a rear-camera input. Kenwood head units are the surest match; check your unit's camera input before buying.
Is it really waterproof?: Yes, the camera is rated waterproof and mounts outside on the license plate. Owners report it surviving rain and car washes.
How is it powered?: It runs off the vehicle's battery, typically wired to the reverse light so it switches on when you back up. It is a wired camera, not wireless.
What resolution does it record?: 1280 x 720 HD at 30fps. That is fine for parking, but it is not 1080p.
Is $119 a good price?: It is the best new price found as of November 7, 2026, at Abt Electronics & Appliances, but it is at the top of its recent range. Waiting for a drop is reasonable if you are not in a hurry.
What is in the box?: The camera and its license-plate mounting attachment. Cables and display are not included, so plan for a video cable run.
Where is the Kenwood CMOS-230LP Universal Backup Camera cheapest?: At Abt Electronics & Appliances, for $119.00, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the Kenwood CMOS-230LP Universal Backup Camera?: Rated 4.4 out of 5 from 40 ratings.
Where can I buy the Kenwood CMOS-230LP Universal Backup Camera?: 4 stores we checked sell it, including Walmart, Abt Electronics & Appliances, Best Buy, BigJeffOnline.
