Our take on the Kexin 256GB SATA III 2.5" Internal SSD

The Kexin 256GB is a 2.5-inch SATA III internal SSD using 3D NAND, rated up to 550 MB/s read and 500 MB/s write. It fits desktops and laptops with a standard SATA bay and works with Windows, Linux and macOS. It is a budget drive from a little-known brand, so the main question is reliability rather than speed. No current price was provided, so check the live comparison before buying.

Best forReviving an older laptop or desktop with a hard driveA cheap boot drive for a secondary or family PCLight gaming and everyday multitaskingAnyone who needs a spare SATA drive, not NVMe
Pros
  • SATA III speeds up to 550 MB/s read and 500 MB/s write, close to the SATA ceiling
  • 2.5-inch form factor drops into most laptops and desktops
  • Works across Windows, Linux and macOS
  • No moving parts, so it shrugs off shocks and bumps
  • Low power draw helps laptop battery life
Cons
  • SATA only, no NVMe or PCIe support, so it is far slower than modern M.2 drives
  • 256GB fills fast with games or video files
  • Kexin is a minor brand with limited track record on long-term reliability
  • No DRAM cache or endurance rating is stated
  • No encryption or management software mentioned

What reviewers say

With 15 ratings averaging 4.6 out of 5, feedback is positive but thin. Buyers mostly report it works as a cheap upgrade; there is not enough volume to judge long-term failure rates.

Pros
  • Easy install and immediate speed boost over a hard drive
  • Good value for the capacity
  • Works as described in older machines
Cons
  • Small sample of ratings makes reliability hard to gauge
  • Capacity runs out quickly for heavy users

Questions and answers

Is the Kexin 256GB SSD worth it?
It makes sense as a low-cost SATA upgrade for an old laptop or desktop, where it will feel much faster than a hard drive. If your machine supports NVMe, a budget NVMe drive is a better buy.
Will it fit my laptop?
It fits any laptop or desktop with a standard 2.5-inch SATA bay and SATA cable. Thin ultrabooks that only take M.2 drives will not accept it.
Is it faster than an NVMe SSD?
No. It tops out around 550 MB/s read over SATA, while NVMe drives reach several thousand MB/s. For everyday tasks the gap is small, but large file transfers are much slower.
Does it work with a Mac?
Yes, macOS is listed as supported, and the 2.5-inch SATA form factor fits older MacBooks and Mac minis. Newer Macs with soldered storage cannot use it.
What comes in the box?
Expect the drive itself; SATA cables, screws and cloning software are not stated. Check that your machine already has a SATA cable and mounting bracket.
When is it cheapest?
Small-brand SATA SSDs like this one tend to drop during sales events and clearance periods. Check the price history on this page before buying.
