Our take on the Knoll Saarinen Tulip Counter Stool

The Knoll Saarinen Tulip Counter Stool is Eero Saarinen's pedestal stool, a backless, swivel seat on a cast-aluminum base. It stands 16.5 inches tall and weighs about 10 lbs, with a foam-padded, upholstered seat in fabrics and leathers such as Classic Boucle, Cato and Acqua Leather. It is a design piece meant to tuck under a counter, not a workhorse bar stool. The best new price is $831.96 at skgtexas.com as of November 3, 2026, with 3 stores selling it new.

Questions and answers

Is the Saarinen Tulip Counter Stool worth the price?
If you want a genuine Saarinen design and the stool is mostly for short sits, yes. For everyday long seating or a busy family bar, a cheaper backless stool does the same job.
What height counter does it fit?
It is 16.5 inches tall, so it suits counters around 34 to 36 inches. It is not a bar-height stool for 40-inch-plus bars.
Does it swivel?
Yes. The seat swivels on the pedestal base, which makes it easier to get in and out at a counter.
What upholstery options are there?
Knoll offers fabrics and leathers including Classic Boucle, Cato, Crossroad, Wow Factor and Acqua Leather. Check the specific store listing for the cover you want.
Is it comfortable without a back?
The foam cushion is padded and fine for meals and short sits. Without a back, it is not meant for lounging or long work sessions.
When is it cheapest?
