Our take on the KYB Excel-G

The KYB Excel-G is a gas-charged twin-tube shock absorber, the brand's OE-replacement line for stock-height vehicles. This front pair fits 2011-2018 Ram 1500 pickups and is meant to restore factory ride and control rather than add lift or off-road travel. The best new price is $19.94 at Appletree Automotive as of November 4, 2026, far below the $173.09 high seen on November 5, 2026, so the listing is volatile and worth watching.

Pros
  • Gas-charged twin-tube design close to factory tuning
  • Sold as a matched front pair
  • Direct fit for 2011-2018 Ram 1500 front position
  • KYB is a major OE supplier, so parts are widely available
  • Low entry price at the current best listing
Cons
  • Not for lifted or leveled trucks needing longer shocks
  • Stock replacement only, no performance upgrade
  • Price swings widely between stores and days
  • Wear items; expect replacement again in roughly 50,000 miles
  • Pair only covers the front, rears sold separately

What reviewers say

Owners of older Ram 1500s generally report the Excel-G restores a firm, controlled ride after worn originals, with good value for a stock replacement. Some find the damping stiffer than expected and note the ride is only as good as the rest of the suspension.

Pros
  • Noticeably tighter body control over bumps
  • Firm but comfortable daily-driver ride
  • Good value versus dealer parts
  • Straightforward bolt-on fit
Cons
  • Firmer than some expect from a stock shock
  • Ride quality depends on worn bushings and springs
  • Not a fix for sagging or lifted suspension

Questions and answers

Will these fit my 2011-2018 Ram 1500?
Yes, this pair is listed for the front position on 2011-2018 Ram 1500 models at stock ride height. Confirm your truck is not lifted or modified before ordering.
Are Excel-G shocks an upgrade over stock?
They are an OE-style replacement, not a performance upgrade. They restore factory-like control and are a sensible choice for a worn daily driver.
Do I need to replace the rear shocks too?
This listing covers the front pair only. Shocks wear as a set, so many owners replace front and rear together for balanced handling.
Is $19.94 a good price?
It is the lowest price seen, $19.94 at Appletree Automotive as of November 4, 2026, against a high of $173.09 on November 5, 2026. The spread is unusually wide, so check the listing carefully before buying.
What is in the box?
A pair of front shock absorbers. Mounting hardware is typically not included, so reuse or buy new nuts and bushings as needed.
When is the best time to buy?
Prices on this part have swung from about $20 to over $170 within days. Watch the price history and buy when a listing sits near the low end.
Where is the KYB Excel-G cheapest?
