Our take on the Lakwar 70mm Aperture 400mm AZ Mount Refractor Telescope

The Lakwar 70mm is a small refractor with a 400mm focal length, an f/6 ratio and an alt-azimuth mount. It is aimed at beginners and kids, and it shows the Moon, planets and bright star clusters at low to moderate power. The best new price is $62.49 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026, and only one store lists it new, so there is no price competition to shop across.

Pros
  • 70mm aperture gathers enough light for the Moon and bright planets
  • Short 400mm tube is compact and easy to store or carry
  • Simple alt-azimuth mount needs no polar alignment
  • Low price for a complete refractor kit
  • Beginner-friendly setup
Cons
  • f/6 optics show color fringing on bright objects like the Moon and Venus
  • The 67x maximum magnification is modest for planets and double stars
  • Only one store sells it new, so there is no price comparison
  • Small aperture limits deep-sky viewing to the brightest targets
  • Lightweight mount can feel shaky at high power

Questions and answers

Is the Lakwar 70mm telescope worth it for a beginner?
Yes, if you want a low-cost first scope for the Moon and bright planets. It will not satisfy someone chasing detailed planetary views or faint galaxies.
What can you see with a 70mm aperture?
The Moon in good detail, Jupiter and its moons, Saturn's rings at low power, and bright clusters like the Pleiades. Faint nebulae and galaxies are mostly out of reach.
What is the maximum useful magnification?
The listing gives 67x. Pushing past roughly 140x on a 70mm scope usually just magnifies blur, so 67x is a realistic ceiling for this kit.
Does it come with a tripod and eyepieces?
It is sold as a complete beginner kit with the alt-azimuth mount and tripod. Check the box contents for the included eyepieces before buying, since they set the magnification you get.
Is it good for kids?
Yes. It is light, simple to point and cheap enough that rough handling is less of a worry. An adult should help with setup and focusing.
When is the best time to buy it?
It has one new listing at $62.49 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026, so there is no competing store to wait on. Watch for holiday sales, when beginner scopes usually drop.
Where is the Lakwar 70mm Aperture 400mm AZ Mount Refractor Telescope cheapest?
At Walmart, for $62.49, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the Lakwar 70mm Aperture 400mm AZ Mount Refractor Telescope?
Rated 3.6 out of 5 from 25 ratings.
