Pros
  • Standalone story that needs no prior Dragon Age game knowledge
  • Ties directly into Dragon Age: Inquisition's griffon and Warden lore
  • Dual timeline keeps the plot moving between two eras
  • Merciel writes grim, weighty fantasy without melodrama
  • Paperback format is cheap and easy to find used or new
Cons
  • Tie-in fiction limits appeal for readers outside the franchise
  • Bleak tone and heavy losses make it a downbeat read
  • Some game fans find the two-timeline structure slows the middle
  • Not a substitute for playing the games if you want full context
