Our take on the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon G9 14" Laptop Core i7-1165G7 16GB 256GB

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 is Lenovo's 14-inch business ultrabook: a 1.13 kg carbon-fiber machine with a 16:10 1920x1200 anti-glare IPS screen, Intel Evo vPro platform and the classic ThinkPad keyboard. This configuration pairs a Core i7-1165G7, 16GB RAM and a 256GB SSD with a 57Wh battery rated up to 16.7 hours. It is a 2021 model, so it now sells well below its original list price; the 256GB SSD is the main compromise. Its latest best price sits near the low end of its recent range for this spec.

Questions and answers

Is the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 still worth buying?: Yes if you want a light, well-built business laptop for office work and web use at a discounted price. It is a poor choice for gaming or heavy video editing.
How does it compare with the Gen 10 or Gen 11?: Newer generations add 12th- and 13th-gen Intel chips, better webcams and slightly improved battery life. The Gen 9 is cheaper and still fast enough for everyday work.
How long does the battery actually last?: Lenovo rates up to 16.7 hours under the MobileMark 2018 test. Expect roughly 8 to 11 hours of mixed office use, and far less under gaming or sustained load.
Can I upgrade the RAM or storage?: RAM is soldered and cannot be upgraded, so buy the 16GB model you need. The M.2 SSD is replaceable, so the 256GB drive can be swapped for a larger one.
What comes in the box?: The laptop and a 65W USB-C power adapter. It does not include a mouse, sleeve or docking station.
When is it cheapest?: Prices for this generation drop during clearance events and back-to-school sales. Track the price history and buy when it dips toward its recent low.
What do buyers say about the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon G9 14" Laptop Core i7-1165G7 16GB 256GB?: Rated 4.6 out of 5 from 2,100 ratings.
