Our take on the Madelyn Carter Steel Modern Vent Cover

This is a steel floor or wall register with adjustable dampers, sold in a 4 x 12 inch nominal size (5.25 x 13.5 inch overall face). It uses spring clips for a snug, screw-free fit, which makes it easy to pull for cleaning or painting. At $35 at Wayfair as of November 4, 2026, it sits at the low end of what steel registers of this size cost; two stores carry it new.

Pros
  • Steel build holds up better than plastic underfoot
  • Adjustable dampers let you balance airflow room to room
  • Spring clips mean no screws and quick removal
  • Works as both a floor and wall register
  • Clean modern look with a slim 5.25 x 13.5 inch face
Cons
  • Only one nominal size listed, so odd duct openings may not fit
  • Steel can show scratches and dents more than painted aluminum
  • No heat-recovery or lighting features, plain airflow control only
  • Clip fit can rattle if the duct opening is uneven

Questions and answers

Is $35 a good price for this vent cover?
Yes. At $35 at Wayfair as of November 4, 2026, it is priced like a basic steel register and well under most decorative steel covers of this size. Two stores list it new, so compare both before buying.
Will it fit my floor opening?
The nominal size is 4 x 12 inches, and the overall face measures 5.25 x 13.5 inches. Measure your duct opening, not the old cover, before ordering.
Do I need screws to install it?
No. It mounts with spring clips that are included, so it presses into the opening and pulls out by hand.
Can I use it on a wall as well as a floor?
Yes. It is listed for both floor and wall mounting, and the adjustable dampers work in either position.
Does it control how much air comes through?
Yes. Each cover has adjustable dampers so you can close off or open up airflow to a room.
