Our take on the Magnetic Vent Cover for Floor and Wall Air Registers

A magnetic vent cover is a flexible sheet that sticks over a floor or wall air register to block or redirect airflow. This one is sized for fireplace and kitchen registers and is sold at $28.49 at Target as of November 4, 2026, the only new price listed. That is the top of the typical $8 to $30 range for a single cover, so it is a fair price only if the size and magnetic strength suit your register.

Best forClosing off a register in an unused roomRedirecting heat away from a fireplace or kitchen ventRenters who want a no-tool, removable fix
Pros
  • No tools or screws; sticks to the metal register frame
  • Removable and repositionable without damage
  • Blocks drafts and stops heating or cooling a room you don't use
  • Works on both floor and wall registers
Cons
  • Only holds on metal registers; useless on plastic or wood
  • A weak magnet or thick trim lets air leak around the edges
  • One cover fits one register, so multiple vents add up
  • Can raise static pressure and reduce airflow elsewhere in the system

Questions and answers

Is $28.49 a good price for a magnetic vent cover?
Single covers usually run about $8 to $30, so $28.49 at Target as of November 4, 2026 sits at the high end. Buy it if the size matches your register; otherwise a cheaper sheet does the same job.
Will it fit my register?
Measure the metal frame, not the opening, and compare it to the cover's dimensions. The cover must overlap the frame on all sides to seal.
Does it work on plastic or wood registers?
No. The cover holds by magnetism, so it needs a steel or iron register frame. Plastic and wood registers need a different clip-on or screw-on cover.
Can blocking a vent damage my HVAC system?
Blocking one or two vents is usually fine, but closing many can raise pressure in the ducts and strain the blower. Keep most registers open.
Is it safe to use over a fireplace vent?
Only if the vent is a cool-air register, not a heat source. Never cover a vent that carries hot exhaust or combustion air.
Where is the Magnetic Vent Cover for Floor and Wall Air Registers cheapest?
