Is the XOB01Z worth it?

Yes if you already own Makita 18V LXT batteries and want cordless sanding for trim, furniture and touch-ups. If you have no LXT batteries, add the cost of a battery and charger before comparing.

What comes in the box?

The sander itself, a dust bag and a 5-inch pad. No battery, charger or case is included, so you need an 18V LXT pack to run it.

How long does the battery last?

Expect roughly 20 to 40 minutes of continuous sanding on a 3.0Ah pack, less under heavy pressure. A 5.0Ah pack roughly doubles that.

Does it take standard 5-inch sanding discs?

Yes. It uses 5-inch hook-and-loop discs with an 8-hole pattern, which are widely available.

Can I hook it to a shop vacuum?

The dust port fits Makita's hose adapter, and many owners run a vacuum hose instead of the bag for better dust capture.

Bare-tool prices dip during Makita promotions and holiday sales. At $139 as of November 3 it is already near its recent low, so waiting may not save much.

Our take on the Makita 18V LXT Cordless 5 in. Random Orbit Sander (XOB01Z)

The Makita XOB01Z is a bare-tool 18V LXT random orbit sander with a 5-inch pad, pad brake and a built-in dust collector. It runs on Makita's 18V LXT batteries, so it suits people already on that platform and jobs away from an outlet. It is sold without a battery or charger. At $139 at Cowls Building Supply as of November 3, it sits near the low end of what this bare tool has sold for recently.
