Our take on the Malwarebytes Standard Premium Software + Privacy VPN

Malwarebytes Premium is an antivirus and anti-malware app for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS, bundled here with Malwarebytes Privacy VPN for 4 devices on a one-year subscription. Premium runs alongside Windows Defender or another antivirus rather than replacing it, and adds real-time blocking of malware, ransomware and malicious websites. The VPN is a separate app that encrypts traffic and hides your IP, with unlimited data. This bundle is the cheapest way to get both, since buying the two separately costs more per year.

Best forWindows users who want a second layer of malware protection
Households covering up to 4 phones, tablets and PCs
People who want a simple no-log VPN without a separate subscription
Less technical users who want set-and-forget protection
Pros
  • Strong record against malware and ransomware in independent lab tests
  • Real-time blocking plus a browser extension that stops phishing sites
  • Light on system resources compared with full security suites
  • VPN includes unlimited data and covers 4 devices
  • One renewal covers both apps and all devices
Cons
  • No firewall, parental controls or password manager, so it is not a full suite
  • VPN server network is small compared with dedicated VPN services
  • VPN is slower than top-tier VPNs on distant servers
  • Renewal price is higher than the first-year price
  • Some features, like the VPN, need separate installs per device

What reviewers say

Owners and reviewers rate Malwarebytes highly for catching threats other antivirus tools miss and for staying out of the way. The VPN gets decent marks for ease of use but is seen as basic next to standalone VPNs. Complaints center on renewal pricing and on the VPN's limited server list.

Pros
  • Catches malware that Windows Defender alone misses
  • Runs quietly in the background without slowing PCs
  • Simple interface that non-experts can set up
  • VPN is easy to turn on and has no data cap
Cons
  • Renewal costs more than the introductory price
  • VPN server locations are limited
  • No phone or chat support on the standard plan
  • Occasional false positives on legitimate downloads

Questions and answers

Is Malwarebytes Premium worth it if I already have Windows Defender?
For most people it is a useful second layer, not a replacement. Defender handles everyday threats well; Malwarebytes adds stronger ransomware and zero-day detection and blocks malicious sites. If you click risky links or download a lot, the bundle is worth it.
Does the VPN work on phones and routers?
The VPN app runs on Windows, Mac, Android and iOS, and the 4-device license covers any mix of those. There is no router app, so it cannot protect devices that don't run one of those systems.
Will Malwarebytes slow down my computer?
No, it is one of the lighter security apps. Real-time scanning uses little CPU and memory, and full scans can be scheduled for when you are not using the machine.
Can I use the VPN without the antivirus?
Yes. The two apps install and run separately, so you can use the VPN on a device without Premium. The license still covers 4 devices total across both apps.
When is the best time to buy?
First-year pricing is usually the lowest, and Black Friday and back-to-school sales cut it further. Renewals bill at the standard rate, so check the renewal price before you commit.
What is in the box?
It is a digital purchase: you get a license key and download links by email, with no disc. You create a Malwarebytes account, enter the key, and install the apps on each device.
