Our take on the Midland AEPREPKIT Advanced Emergency Preparedness Bundle

The Midland AEPREPKIT is a bundle of emergency radio gear built around Midland's handheld weather-scanning radios, in black, with a claimed range of up to 38 miles. It is aimed at households that want a ready-made kit for storms, outages and backcountry trips rather than buying pieces one at a time. The bundle format means the value depends on how many of the included items you would actually use.

Questions and answers

Is the Midland AEPREPKIT worth it over buying radios separately?
Only if you will use most of the included items. Add up the price of the radios and accessories you actually need and compare that total with the bundle price at the same store.
What is actually in the bundle?
Contents vary by listing, so check the included-items list before buying. Midland bundles typically pair weather-scanning handhelds with accessories such as chargers or cases, but confirm the exact radios and counts.
How far will these radios really reach?
Midland rates up to 38 miles, but that is a best case over open line of sight. Expect much less inside buildings, in dense woods or across hills, often around a mile or two in town.
Do these radios get NOAA weather alerts?
Yes, weather scanning is part of the kit. The radios can pick up NOAA weather channels and alert tones, which is the main reason to choose this over plain two-way radios.
Can I use the radios without a license?
Midland's consumer handhelds run on FRS/GMRS channels, which generally do not require a license for FRS use. Check the specific model in the bundle if you plan to use GMRS channels.
When is the best time to buy an emergency kit like this?
Prices tend to dip outside severe-weather season and during spring and fall preparedness sales. Watch the price history and buy when it sits near its recent low.
