Our take on the Milwaukee M12 FUEL Brushless Cordless HACKZALL Reciprocating Saw Kit with 5.0 Ah Battery

The Milwaukee M12 FUEL HACKZALL is a compact one-handed reciprocating saw built on the M12 12V battery platform. It uses a brushless motor rated at 3,000 strokes per minute with a 5/8-inch stroke, so it cuts close to walls and overhead without a long blade swinging around. This kit ships with two batteries and a charger. It is a specialty tool: great for pipe, conduit and PVC, limited on thick lumber.

Best forPlumbers and electricians cutting pipe and conduitOverhead and tight-space cutsOne-handed use on a ladderTrades already on the M12 battery platform
Pros
  • One-handed grip and short body reach into tight spots
  • Brushless motor with 3,000 SPM and 5/8-inch stroke
  • Kit includes two batteries and a charger
  • Shares M12 batteries with other Milwaukee 12V tools
  • Light enough to use overhead for long stretches
Cons
  • 12V power is modest for thick wood or demolition
  • Short stroke cuts slower than full-size Sawzalls
  • Blade changes need the tool-free collar, not a quick-release lever
  • Kit price is high if you already own M12 batteries

Questions and answers

Is the HACKZALL strong enough for cutting pipe?
Yes. It handles copper, PVC and conduit well, and the 5/8-inch stroke keeps cuts clean in thin-wall material. It is not the tool for cutting cast iron or thick steel.
How does it compare to a full-size Sawzall?
It is smaller and lighter, so it reaches places a full-size saw cannot. It is slower on thick lumber and demolition work, where the 18V or corded Sawzall is the better pick.
What comes in the kit?
The saw, two M12 lithium-ion batteries and a charger. Confirm the exact battery capacity in the listing, since Milwaukee sells this kit with different pack sizes.
Will it cut 2x4 lumber?
It will, but slowly. The 12V motor and short stroke suit occasional cuts, not framing or repeated ripping.
Does it use the same batteries as other M12 tools?
Yes. It runs on any Milwaukee M12 battery, so it fits an existing M12 drill or impact driver collection.
What do buyers say about the Milwaukee M12 FUEL Brushless Cordless HACKZALL Reciprocating Saw Kit with 5.0 Ah Battery?
Rated 4.9 out of 5 from 23 ratings.
