Is the Vanquish 340 worth it for a beginner?

Yes, if you want real multi-frequency performance without spending Equinox money. It is simple to run and the 10-inch coil covers most park and beach hunting. Skip it if you plan to hunt highly mineralized ground, where its fixed ground balance holds it back.

How does the 340 differ from the Vanquish 440 and 540?

The 340 has a fixed ground balance, no pinpoint mode and no backlight. The 440 adds pinpoint and a backlight, and the 540 adds Bluetooth, more volume control and a rechargeable battery pack option. All three share Multi-IQ and the three search modes.

What batteries does it use and how long do they last?

It takes four AA alkaline batteries. Expect roughly 10 to 12 hours per set depending on mode and volume, so carry spares.

Is the coil waterproof?

Yes, the 10-inch coil can be submerged in shallow water. The control housing is water-resistant, not waterproof, so do not dunk it.

The detector with its 10-inch coil, an adjustable shaft and armrest, and a carry bag in this bundle. Batteries and headphones are not included.

When is the best time to buy?

Entry-level Minelab detectors see the deepest discounts around Black Friday and spring outdoor sales. Check the price history before buying, since bundle prices move with the bag.
