Our take on the Motobecane Super Mirage SL Road Bike

The Motobecane Super Mirage SL is an aluminum endurance road bike with a taller head tube for a more upright ride, a Shimano Claris 16-speed drivetrain and Tektro Mira mechanical disc brakes. Its unusual feature is a second set of XTL brake levers mounted on the flat top of the bar, so you can brake without reaching for the hoods or drops. It ships with pedals and a kickstand, which is rare on a road bike. The price has held at $699 at Bikesdirect.com since October 30, 2026, so there is no cheaper moment in its recent history to wait for.

Best forCommuters who want disc brakes and an upright positionNew road riders not ready for a low, aggressive fitRiders who want braking from the bar tops in trafficBudget buyers who want a complete bike with pedals included
Pros
  • Second set of XTL brake levers on the bar top gives braking from any hand position
  • Mechanical disc brakes with 160mm rotors work in rain and grit
  • Shimano Claris 16-speed STI puts shifting and braking in one place
  • Taller head tube gives a comfortable, endurance-style fit
  • Ships with pedals and a kickstand at no extra cost
  • Bladed CrMo fork with braze-ons for racks or extra mounts
Cons
  • Claris is Shimano's entry-level road group, with 8 rear speeds and wider gear steps
  • Mechanical discs need cable adjustment and don't self-adjust like hydraulic
  • Aero rim wheelset and bladed fork add weight savings claims that matter little at this price
  • No thru-axles listed; quick-release disc setups can need re-centering
  • Price has not moved from $699, so there is no discount to chase

Questions and answers

Is the Super Mirage SL worth $699?
At $699 at Bikesdirect.com as of October 30, 2026, you get an aluminum disc-brake road bike with a full Claris drivetrain, plus pedals and a kickstand. Comparable disc road bikes from major brands usually cost more, but they often come with better brakes or a carbon fork.
What is the difference between the XTL levers and normal brake levers?
The XTL levers are extra brake handles mounted left and right of the stem on the flat bar top. They let you brake with your hands up high, which helps in traffic or when stopped with one leg down. The main levers on the drops still work as usual.
How many gears does it have?
It has a Shimano Claris 16-speed setup, which means two chainrings in front and eight cogs in back. That is enough for rolling terrain and commuting, but the steps between gears are wider than on 10- or 11-speed bikes.
Are the brakes good in rain?
Tektro Mira mechanical disc brakes with 160mm rotors stop consistently in wet weather, unlike rim brakes on wet rims. They are cable-actuated, so check cable tension and pad wear periodically.
What comes in the box?
The bike ships with a set of 9/16-inch pedals with boron steel axles and a kickstand included. Plan on adding your own saddle bag, lights and bottle cages.
When is it cheapest?
The lowest recorded daily price is $699 at Bikesdirect.com, first seen October 30, 2026, and it has not dropped since. Waiting has not produced a lower price so far.
What do buyers say about the Motobecane Super Mirage SL Road Bike?
Buyers like: Reliable bike, great for commuting; Pretty good value; XTL levers handy on bar top in traffic and hazardous situations.
