Is the Motorola T802 worth it?

It is a reasonable pick if you want license-free FRS radios with weather alerts and rechargeable batteries. If range is your priority, step up to a higher-power model or a GMRS radio with a license.

Do I need a license for the T802?

No. It operates on FRS frequencies, which do not require an FCC license in the US.

Does the 35-mile range hold up?

No. That figure assumes open water with clear line of sight. In neighborhoods, woods or mountains expect roughly one to a few miles.

How long does the battery last?

Motorola rates the 1300 mAh NiMH pack at 16 hours. Real use with frequent transmitting and weather alerts will be shorter.

It is IP54 rated, which means dust-protected and resistant to splashes. It is not submersible, so don't drop it in the water.

What comes in the box?

Typically a pair of radios, rechargeable battery packs, a charging base or cables, belt clips and a user guide. Check the listing for the exact bundle.

Our take on the Motorola Talkabout T802 2-Way Radio

The Motorola Talkabout T802 is a license-free FRS two-way radio pair aimed at families, campers and boaters. It has 22 channels, 11 weather channels with NOAA alerts, dual watch, a rechargeable 1300 mAh NiMH battery rated for 16 hours and IP54 water and dust resistance. The 35-mile range figure is an open-water best case; expect far less in neighborhoods or woods. It is a mid-priced Talkabout, and its rating of 3.7 out of 5 from 9 ratings is modest.
