Our take on the Mr. Heater 50,000 BTU Forced Air Unit Heater (Propane or Natural Gas)

The Mr. Heater forced air unit heater is a gas-fired shop heater that blows heated air across a garage, workshop or job site. It runs on propane or natural gas and is listed for outdoor installation, so it is not a drop-in replacement for a vented indoor furnace. The only new price found is $439.99 at Amazon as of November 7, 2026, with no other store competing on it.

Best forHeating a garage or workshopJob sites and outbuildingsBuyers with propane or natural gas on handSpot heating a large open space
Pros
  • Forced air fan spreads heat quickly over a wide area
  • Runs on either propane or natural gas
  • Thermo-electric safety valve cuts gas if the flame goes out
  • High-temperature shut-off switch adds a second safety layer
  • Steel body and about 19 lb package weight make it easy to move
Cons
  • Listed for outdoor installation only, which limits indoor use
  • No thermostat, so heat is switched on and off by hand
  • No tip-over switch
  • Vented design needs a flue or exhaust path
  • Spec sheet lists 60,000 BTU while the name says 50,000, so confirm output before buying

Questions and answers

Is this heater safe to use indoors?
The listing gives the installation location as outdoor, and it is a vented unit. Treat it as an outdoor or well-ventilated space heater unless the manual for your exact model says otherwise.
Does it come with a thermostat?
No. The specs list no thermostat, so you control it with the unit's own on/off switch or an external thermostat you add.
Is it 50,000 or 60,000 BTU?
The product name says 50,000 BTU, but the spec sheet lists 60,000 BTU heat output. Check the model number on the box before you buy to be sure which rating you get.
Can it run on natural gas as well as propane?
Yes, the specs list both propane and gas as power types. Confirm the unit ships with the right orifice or conversion kit for your fuel before installing.
What area will it heat?
The listed heating area is 1,500 sq ft. Real coverage depends on ceiling height, insulation and how cold it is outside, so expect less in an uninsulated garage.
Is $439.99 a good price?
It is the only new price found, $439.99 at Amazon as of November 7, 2026, so there is no competing store price to compare against. Check the price history before buying to see whether it has sold lower.
Where is the Mr. Heater 50,000 BTU Forced Air Unit Heater (Propane or Natural Gas) cheapest?
At Amazon, for $439.99, as of our latest check.
