Our take on the Munchkin Play Mat

The Munchkin Play Mat is a 58-by-58-inch square mat made of nylon with a cushioned center and a self-contained carry bag. It is built for outdoor use: picnics, backyards, beaches and parks, with babies and families in mind. It is machine washable, which matters for a mat that sits on grass and sand. Questions and answers

Is the Munchkin Play Mat big enough for a family?
At 58 by 58 inches it is about 4 feet 10 inches per side, enough for a few adults sitting or a baby with toys. It suits small family groups rather than large gatherings.
Can it go on sand or wet grass?
It is listed for beaches and parks, but the material is nylon with no waterproof backing stated. On wet ground, moisture can soak through, so put a blanket underneath or avoid soggy spots.
How do you clean it?
It is machine washable. Shake off sand first, then wash on a gentle cycle and air dry; the carry bag should be washed separately or wiped clean.
Does it come with a bag?
Yes. The mat includes a self-contained carry bag, so it folds into its own storage sack for trips.
Is it cushioned enough for a baby to play on?
It has a cushioned center, which softens hard ground, but it is not a thick foam play mat. For newborns or tile floors, add a padded blanket underneath.
When is the best time to buy it?
Outdoor mats tend to be discounted in late summer and early fall as picnic season winds down. Check the price history on this page to see whether the current price is below its usual range.
