Our take on the Nintendo Dragon Quest XI S Echoes of an Elusive Age

Dragon Quest XI S is the definitive Switch version of the long-running series' eleventh main entry: a turn-based JRPG with a silent hero, a party of colorful companions and a 60-plus hour story. This edition adds a 2D pixel-art mode, orchestral music and extra character side stories over the original release. At $39.99 at Best Buy as of November 6, 2026, it sits at the standard full price for a first-party Switch RPG rather than a discount.

Best forJRPG fans who want a long, traditional turn-based adventurePlayers new to Dragon Quest who want the most complete versionHandheld players who like switching between 3D and 2D modesFans of Akira Toriyama's art and classic fantasy stories
Pros
  • Huge main story plus post-game content, easily 80+ hours
  • Orchestral soundtrack and Japanese voice option in this edition
  • 2D pixel-art mode offers a second way to play the whole game
  • Party characters are memorable and each gets a side story
  • Runs well in both docked and handheld modes
Cons
  • Full price at $39.99; discounts are uncommon
  • Slow opening hours before the story opens up
  • Turn-based combat and silent protagonist feel old-fashioned to some
  • Download-only, so it takes up storage space on the console
