Our take on the NorthStar Quiet Armor Commercial-Grade Portable Generator with Honda GX270 Engine, 5500 Surge Watts

The NorthStar Quiet Armor is a portable gasoline generator built around a Honda GX270 engine, rated at 4,500 running watts and 5,500 surge watts. It uses a steel enclosure to dampen noise, holds 8 gallons of fuel for about 15 hours at half load, and offers 120/240V output through seven outlets. It is not CARB compliant, so it cannot be sold for use in California. It starts by recoil only, with no battery or electric start.

Questions and answers

Is the NorthStar Quiet Armor 5500 worth it?
It makes sense if you want a Honda-powered, 240V-capable generator with long run time and quieter operation. You pay more weight and a recoil-only start for that durability.
How loud is it compared with an open-frame generator?
The steel Quiet Armor enclosure muffles noise more than a bare open-frame unit, but it is still a conventional generator, not an inverter. Expect noticeably quieter than open-frame, not whisper-quiet.
Can it run a house during an outage?
It can power selected circuits through a transfer switch at 4,500 running watts, with 5,500 surge for motor starts. It will not run a whole house with central AC and electric heat.
Does it come with a battery or electric start?
No. It starts by recoil pull only and ships without a battery. There is no electric start option listed.
Can I use it in California?
No. It is not CARB compliant, so it is not legal for sale or use in California.
How long does it run on a full tank?
About 15.1 hours at half load on its 8-gallon tank. Full-load run time will be shorter.
