Our take on the Novation FLkey 61 USB MIDI Keyboard Controller for FL Studio

The FLkey 61 is a 61-key USB MIDI controller built around FL Studio, with full-size semi-weighted keys, 16 pads, nine faders and eight knobs. Its controls map directly to FL Studio's channel rack, mixer and step sequencer, and it adds scale and chord modes for sketching ideas fast. It is bus powered over USB and has no built-in sounds. At $216 at Music Store US as of November 4, 2026, it sits near the low end of its recent price range across the six stores that carry it.

Questions and answers

Is the FLkey 61 worth it over a generic MIDI keyboard?
If you work mainly in FL Studio, yes. The pads, faders and transport controls are pre-mapped to the channel rack, mixer and step sequencer, which saves setup time. In other DAWs much of that advantage goes away.
Does it come with FL Studio?
It includes a six-month trial of FL Studio Producer Edition, not a permanent license. You will need to buy or already own FL Studio to keep using it after the trial.
Do the keys have aftertouch?
No. The keys are velocity sensitive but there is no aftertouch, so expressive playing that relies on pressure after the initial strike is not supported.
Can I use it without a computer?
No. It has no sound engine and no MIDI DIN ports, so it needs a computer over USB. It is bus powered, so no separate power adapter is required.
How does it compare to the 37-key FLkey?
The 61 gives you four more octaves for two-handed playing and splits, at the cost of a much wider footprint. The 37 is easier to fit on a small desk; the 61 suits fuller keyboard parts.
When is the best time to buy?
Its price moves with store sales, and $216 at Music Store US as of November 4, 2026 is already near the low end of its recent range. Waiting for a deeper discount is unlikely to save much.
