Our take on the Nutri Source Grain-Free High Plains Select 26 Lb

NutriSource Grain-Free High Plains Select is a dry kibble for dogs of all life stages, built on beef, beef meal and turkey meal with garbanzo beans and green lentils in place of grains. It adds probiotics and prebiotics aimed at gut support and is marketed toward dogs with sensitive stomachs. The 26 lb bag is the large format; the line is sold mainly through independent pet retailers, so per-pound price varies more than at big-box stores.

Questions and answers

Is this food good for a dog with a sensitive stomach?
It is formulated with probiotics and prebiotics and is grain-free, which is why it is marketed for sensitive stomachs. Owners in the ratings back that up, but any diet change should be made gradually over a week or more.
Is grain-free food safe for dogs?
Grain-free diets are widely fed, but the FDA has investigated a possible link between legume-heavy grain-free foods and a heart condition called DCM. The investigation did not establish cause. Ask your vet if your dog has a heart condition or you are unsure.
What is the first ingredient?
Beef leads the ingredient list, followed by beef meal, turkey meal, garbanzo beans and green lentils. Named meats and meals come before the legumes.
How long does a 26 lb bag last?
For a 50 lb dog eating roughly 2 to 2.5 cups a day, expect about four to five weeks. Small dogs will stretch it much further. Check the bag's feeding chart for your dog's weight.
Is it suitable for puppies?
It is labeled for all life stages, so it can be fed to puppies and adults. Large-breed puppies have specific calcium needs, so confirm with your vet before using one formula throughout growth.
When is the price lowest?
Prices for this line move with retailer promotions rather than seasons. Compare the per-pound price across stores and check the price history before buying a 26 lb bag.
