Our take on the Orion StarBlast 4.5 Astro Reflector Telescope

The Orion StarBlast 4.5 Astro is a tabletop Dobsonian reflector with a 4.5-inch (114 mm) mirror at f/4, giving a wide field of view in a 12 lb package. It sits on a simple altazimuth base with no motors or Go-To electronics, so you aim and track by hand. The fast f/4 optics and short 7.75-inch tube make it easy to carry and quick to set up, and the EZ Finder II reflex sight gets you on target fast. It is a popular first serious telescope for viewing the Moon, planets and bright deep-sky objects.

Best forFirst-time telescope buyers who want real optics without electronicsGrab-and-go viewing from a balcony, yard or campsite
Wide-field scanning of the Milky Way and star clusters
Families and casual observers on a budget
Pros
  • 4.5-inch aperture gathers enough light for the Moon, planets and brighter nebulae
  • Fast f/4 ratio gives a wide field for sweeping star fields
  • Tabletop altazimuth base needs no tripod or alignment
  • Light at 12 lbs and short, so it travels easily
  • Reflex finder is quicker to use than a small optical finder
Cons
  • No tracking or Go-To, so high-power views drift out of frame
  • f/4 optics show coma and need careful collimation
  • Tabletop base requires a sturdy surface at a comfortable height
  • Stock eyepieces are basic; a Barlow and better eyepieces add cost
  • Small aperture limits faint galaxies and fine planetary detail

What reviewers say

Owners and reviewers treat the StarBlast 4.5 as one of the best value beginner scopes: easy to set up, sharp on the Moon and planets, and wide enough for deep-sky hunting. The main complaints are the need to collimate the fast mirror and the lack of tracking at high magnification.

Pros
  • Simple setup and no electronics to fail
  • Bright, wide views for its size
  • Portable and light enough to carry outside in one trip
  • Good optical quality for the price
Cons
  • Needs collimation, especially after transport
  • Objects drift out of view at high power
  • Base can wobble or need a solid table
  • Included eyepieces are entry-level

Questions and answers

Is the StarBlast 4.5 good for a beginner?
Yes. It has no motors or alignment routine, so you just point it and look. The trade-off is that you track objects by hand, which takes a little practice at high magnification.
Can it see planets and the Moon?
Yes. The Moon shows craters and the planets show disks and some detail, but the 4.5-inch aperture and f/4 mirror limit fine planetary detail compared with longer-focal-ratio scopes.
Do I need to collimate it?
Yes, reflectors need collimation, and the fast f/4 mirror is less forgiving than slower designs. Check alignment after carrying it and use a collimation cap or laser tool.
What comes in the box?
The optical tube, tabletop altazimuth base, EZ Finder II reflex sight, one 1.25-inch Explorer II eyepiece and a Barlow lens. Eyepiece focal lengths vary by kit, so check the listing.
Does it work with a tripod or camera?
The base is a tabletop altazimuth mount, not a tripod head. It is not set up for astrophotography; a phone adapter can capture the Moon, but long exposures need a tracking mount.
When is it cheapest?
Tabletop Dobsonians like this tend to dip during holiday sales and end-of-season clearances. Compare the current price against its recent range before buying.
