Is the Downwool 270 warm enough for skiing?

Ortovox rates it 9/10 for warmth, so it works as a cold-weather midlayer or standalone jacket in dry alpine conditions. In wet or windy weather, wear it under a shell.

It uses a down-and-wool blend, not pure synthetic. The wool adds moisture and odor management, but it still dries slower than a synthetic fill.

It comes in men's X-XXL and women's XS-XL. Ortovox alpine fit tends to be trim, so size up if you plan to layer a fleece underneath.

Is $550 a good price?

Only one store lists it new at $550 as of November 7, 2026, so there is no cheaper new option to compare against. Watch for end-of-season sales if you can wait.

No. It is rated 9/10 for weather protection, which covers wind and light snow, but it is not a waterproof shell.

The jacket only. No stuff sack or shell is included.

Our take on the Ortovox Downwool 270 Jacket

The Ortovox Downwool 270 is a men's and women's insulated jacket that pairs a down fill with wool, aimed at cold-weather alpine and ski-touring use. Ortovox rates it 9/10 for warmth and 9/10 for weather protection, so it is built for serious cold rather than mild shoulder seasons. It comes in men's X-XXL and women's XS-XL. The best new price is $550 at Amazon as of November 7, 2026, from a single store, so there is little price competition to shop around.
