Our take on the Osprey Stratos 36 Backpack

The Osprey Stratos 36 is a 36-liter men's hiking daypack built around Osprey's suspended mesh AirSpeed back panel, which keeps the pack off your back for airflow on hot climbs. It has a zippered main compartment with a drawstring collar, dual stretch stash pockets, and an integrated rain cover. At 36 liters it fits a full day out or a light overnight, and it sits in the middle of Osprey's Stratos line between the 24 and 44.

  • Durable nylon build backed by Osprey's lifetime warranty
Cons
  • Ventilated back panel pushes weight slightly away from your body

Questions and answers

Is the Stratos 36 worth it for day hikes?
Yes, if you hike in warm weather or sweat heavily. The ventilated back panel is the main reason to pay more than a basic daypack, and 36 liters is enough for a full day with layers and food.
How does it compare with the Stratos 24?
The 36 adds about 12 liters, enough for an overnight or winter layers, at the cost of some weight and bulk. For short summer hikes the 24 is lighter and cheaper.
Does it come with a rain cover?
Yes. An integrated rain cover is included and stows in its own pocket at the base of the pack.
What size torso does it fit?
It is sold in one size with an adjustable torso length, so it fits a range of body types. Check Osprey's torso measurement guide before buying, since fit drives comfort more than capacity.
Can it work as a carry-on?
Usually yes on major airlines, since 36 liters is within most carry-on limits. It is soft-sided, so it compresses if a gate agent checks size.
When is it cheapest?
Osprey packs tend to drop during end-of-season sales and around major holiday sales. Watch the price history for a dip below the recent range before buying.
What do buyers say about the Osprey Stratos 36 Backpack?
Rated 4.7 out of 5 from 286 ratings.
