Our take on the PARRIS Crockett's Old Betsy

PARRIS Crockett's Old Betsy is a 37.25-inch replica rifle modeled on a pre-1898 frontier long gun, built from wood and steel and finished with the federally required orange tip. It fires pull-off caps rather than foam darts, so it is a sound-and-smoke toy in the cap-gun tradition, not a blaster that shoots projectiles. At 1.15 lb it is light enough for a kid to shoulder. The best new price is $22.95 at Rainbow Resource Center as of November 4, 2026, with three stores listing it new.

Pros
  • Real wood and steel construction, not all plastic
  • Full orange tip meets federal toy-gun marking rules
  • Fires pull-off caps for bang and smoke
  • Light 1.15 lb, easy for a child to hold
  • Long 37.25-inch profile looks like a real long rifle
Cons
  • Caps sold separately and can be hard to find
  • No projectile firing, so no foam-dart play
  • Not a set, so no caps or accessories in the box
  • Orange tip is permanent and breaks the historical look
  • Cap residue leaves soot on the metal

Questions and answers

Is it worth $22.95?
Yes if you want a wood-and-steel cap rifle for a kid or a display. At $22.95 at Rainbow Resource Center as of November 4, 2026, it costs about what a plastic cap gun does but looks far better.
Does it shoot anything?
No. It only fires pull-off caps for noise and smoke. There are no darts or projectiles, so it is not a foam blaster despite the toy-blaster category.
Are caps included?
No. It is not a set, so you need to buy pull-off caps separately. Ring caps for toy guns are the usual match.
How big is it for a child?
It is 37.25 inches long and weighs 1.15 lb, close to a real long rifle in size. That suits older kids and teens better than small children.
Is the orange tip removable?
No. The full orange tip is federally required on toy guns and is molded in. Removing it would make the replica illegal to sell as a toy.
When is it cheapest?
Cap rifles like this tend to dip outside the fall and holiday gift season. Watch the price history for drops below the current $22.95.

At Rainbow Resource Center, for $22.95, as of our latest check.
