Is the DDJ-FLX4 good for a complete beginner?

Yes. It is one of the standard first controllers: the layout matches club gear, and Smart Fader and Smart CFX help you mix before you have mastered beatmatching by ear.

Does it work with Serato without paying extra?

It unlocks Serato DJ Lite for free. Serato DJ Pro needs a separate paid license or subscription.

Do I need a power adapter?

No. It runs off USB bus power from your laptop over the included USB-C cable.

Can I connect speakers and headphones at the same time?

Yes. There is an RCA master output for speakers and a 3.5 mm headphone jack for cueing.

Is it worth upgrading from the DDJ-400?

If you already own a DDJ-400, the jump is small: USB-C, Smart Fader and Smart CFX are the main additions. For a first purchase, the FLX4 is the better pick.

It has sold below $339 during sales events. At $339 it is near the top of its recent range, so waiting for a promotion can save money.

Our take on the Pioneer DJ 2-Channel DJ Controller DDJ-FLX4

The DDJ-FLX4 is Pioneer DJ's entry-level two-channel controller, built for learning to mix at home or playing small parties. It works with rekordbox and Serato DJ Lite out of the box, connects over USB-C, and includes onboard effects plus a smart fader and smart CFX for smoother blends. It is bus-powered over USB, so no separate power supply is needed. At $339 it sits at the top of its usual street range, so it is not a bargain right now.
