Our take on the PNY CS900 500GB SATA III 2.5" Internal SSD 2-Pack Kit

The PNY CS900 is a 2.5-inch SATA III SSD with 550 MB/s sequential read and 500 MB/s write speeds, sold here as a two-pack of 500GB drives. It is a budget drive aimed at reviving older laptops and desktops or adding fast storage to a machine with a spare SATA bay. The best new price is $159.98 at B&H Photo-Video-Audio as of November 3, 2026, for two drives, or about $80 each. That is well above the roughly $30–$45 a single 500GB SATA SSD typically costs, so this kit is priced for convenience, not value.

Pros
  • SATA III interface works in almost any laptop or desktop from the last 15 years
  • 550 MB/s read and 500 MB/s write are near the SATA ceiling
  • 7 mm height fits thin laptops and most drive caddies
  • 2 million hour MTBF rating suggests decent endurance for everyday use
  • Two-pack covers a pair of upgrades in one purchase
Cons
  • No hardware encryption, so no Opal or self-encrypting drive support
  • DRAM-less design slows sustained writes compared with premium SATA drives
  • Two-pack price of $159.98 works out to about $80 per drive, far above single-drive pricing
  • No M.2 or NVMe option here; SATA caps speed well below modern drives
  • No cloning software or SATA cable included in the box

Questions and answers

Is the PNY CS900 500GB two-pack worth it at $159.98?
Only if you specifically need two drives in one order. At $159.98 at B&H Photo-Video-Audio as of November 3, 2026, you pay about $80 per drive, while single 500GB SATA SSDs usually sell for far less. Buy two single drives instead unless this kit is discounted.
Will this fit my laptop?
It is a standard 2.5-inch, 7 mm SATA drive, so it fits most laptops and desktops made since around 2010 that take a 2.5-inch drive. Check that your machine has a SATA bay and not only an M.2 slot.
How fast is it compared with an NVMe drive?
It tops out around 550 MB/s read and 500 MB/s write, which is the SATA limit. A PCIe NVMe drive can be several times faster, so use this only where SATA is the available connection.
Does it come with cloning software or cables?
The kit is the two drives and packaging; expect no SATA cable and no cloning software. Plan to reinstall the OS or use free cloning tools and a cable you already own.
Is it good for a PS4 or PS5?
It works in a PS4 as a replacement internal drive and speeds up loading over the stock hard drive. The PS5 needs an M.2 NVMe drive for expansion, so this will not fit there.
When is it cheapest?
Two-packs like this tend to drop during Black Friday and back-to-school sales. Track the price history and compare against buying two single 500GB drives, which is often cheaper.
Where is the PNY CS900 500GB SATA III 2.5" Internal SSD 2-Pack Kit cheapest?
At B&H Photo-Video-Audio, for $159.98, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the PNY CS900 500GB SATA III 2.5" Internal SSD 2-Pack Kit?
Rated 4.8 out of 5 from 13,000 ratings.
