Our take on the Premium Veg-tanned Leather Strap, 1.5" Wide x 60" Long

A single 60-inch strip of vegetable-tanned leather, 1.5 inches wide and about 7 oz thick. Veg-tan is the right choice for tooling: it takes stamping, carving and burnishing far better than chrome-tanned leather, and it darkens with age. The 7 oz weight is heavy enough for belts and straps but still workable by hand. It is a raw material, not a finished belt, so expect to cut, punch, dye and finish it yourself.

Best forLeathercraft beginners practicing tooling and stampingMakers cutting their own belts and bag straps
Woodworkers needing leather for handles and hinges
DIY furniture weaving and repair
Pros
  • Veg-tan accepts tooling, carving and dye evenly
  • 7 oz is sturdy for belts and load-bearing straps
  • 60-inch length leaves room for one full belt plus offcuts
  • 1.5-inch width suits standard belt loops
  • Takes edge paint, wax and burnishing well
Cons
  • Sold as a raw strap, so no holes, buckle or finish
  • 7 oz is stiff for small goods like wallets
  • Natural hide means some scars, stretch marks or uneven color
  • Needs conditioning and edge work before use
  • One strap only, so a mistake wastes a lot of length

Questions and answers

Is 7 oz thick enough for a belt?
Yes. 7 oz, roughly 2.8 mm, is a common weight for casual belts. Dress belts often run thinner at 4 to 5 oz; heavy work belts run 9 oz or more.
Can I tool and stamp this leather?
Yes. Vegetable-tanned leather is the standard for tooling because it holds impressions when cased with water. Chrome-tanned leather does not.
Will one 60-inch strap make a belt?
Usually yes. Measure your waist and add about 8 to 10 inches for the buckle fold and tip. A 60-inch strap fits most waists up to roughly 44 inches.
Does it come with holes or a buckle?
No. It is a plain strap. You cut the tip, punch holes and add your own buckle and keeper.
How should I finish the edges?
Sand the edges progressively, then burnish with gum tragacanth or water, or apply edge paint in thin coats. Veg-tan edges burnish much better than chrome-tan.
When is it cheapest?
Leather prices track hide supply, and sides and straps tend to dip in late winter after the fall slaughter season. Watch for multi-strap bundles, which lower the per-inch cost.
