Our take on the R13 Unfaced Fiberglass Batt Insulation 2x4 Wall

R13 unfaced fiberglass batts are the standard insulation for 2x4 exterior walls, fitting between studs 16 inches on center. They are GREENGUARD certified for low chemical emissions and are sold in packs of precut batts. Unfaced batts are the cheapest form of fiberglass wall insulation and are meant to be covered by drywall or another interior finish. The latest best price sits at the low end of its recent range, so this is a good time to buy if you have a wall open.

Pros
  • Lowest cost per square foot of the common wall insulations
  • Fits standard 16-inch stud spacing without cutting
  • GREENGUARD certified for indoor air emissions
  • Light and easy to cut with a utility knife
  • Works in new construction and retrofit jobs
Cons
  • Fiberglass irritates skin and lungs; wear gloves, glasses and a mask
  • Must be covered: exposed batts are a fire and code problem
  • No vapor retarder, so it is wrong for some cold-climate walls
  • Compressing it or leaving gaps cuts the R13 rating
  • Not a soundproofing or air-sealing product on its own

Questions and answers

Is R13 enough for a 2x4 exterior wall?
R13 is the usual choice for a 2x4 wall because the cavity is only 3.5 inches deep. In cold climates, check local code: many areas want a vapor retarder or more R-value on the outside.
Do I need a vapor barrier with unfaced batts?
Unfaced means no facing and no built-in vapor retarder. In cold climates you usually add a separate vapor retarder on the warm side; in mild climates check your local code.
How many batts do I need?
Measure the total wall area and divide by the coverage printed on the pack. Add about 10 percent for cuts and mistakes around outlets, corners and windows.
Can I leave it exposed?
No. Exposed fiberglass is a fire and code issue and releases fibers into the room. Cover it with drywall or another approved finish.
Is it worth it over spray foam?
It costs far less and is fine for straight stud bays. Spray foam seals air better and suits odd cavities, but it costs several times more.
When is it cheapest?
Insulation prices are fairly stable, but packs go on sale in spring and fall before heating and cooling season. Buying enough packs at once usually beats repeat small orders.
