Is the Rab Mythic Ultra warm enough for winter mountaineering?

Yes. With 900 fill down and a heat-reflective lining, it is built for cold alpine conditions and works as a belay or summit layer. Pair it with a shell in wind and precipitation.

Is the Mythic Ultra waterproof?

No. The Pertex Quantum shell is windproof and water-resistant at best, and the down is hydrophobic, but the jacket is not a rain layer. Carry a hardshell over it in wet weather.

How much does the Rab Mythic Ultra weigh?

18.8 oz in the listed size. That is light for the warmth, which is the main reason alpinists pick it.

Does the hood fit over a climbing helmet?

Yes. The attached hood is helmet-compatible and adjustable.

What sizes does it come in?

Alpha sizes S, M, L and XL. The listed chest measurement for size S is 94 cm.

When is the best time to buy it?

Our take on the Rab Mythic Ultra

The Rab Mythic Ultra is a men's mountaineering down jacket built around 900 fill hydrophobic down and a Pertex Quantum recycled polyamide shell with heat-reflective lining. It weighs 18.8 oz and packs small for its warmth, with a helmet-compatible hood and a hip-length cut. The shell is windproof but not waterproof and not especially abrasion-resistant, so it suits cold dry alpine use more than wet brushy terrain. Its best new price is $525.00 at Backcountry.com as of November 4, 2026, with two stores listing it new.
