Do I need a license to use these?

No, these operate on FRS (Family Radio Service) frequencies, which do not require an FCC license for consumer use.

Are they compatible with Motorola or Midland radios?

Yes, as long as the other radios are set to the same FRS channel and privacy code, they will communicate regardless of brand.

While FRS radios often claim long distances, expect 0.5 to 1.5 miles in typical wooded or suburban conditions.

These typically require AAA batteries, though you should check the packaging as some versions include rechargeable packs.
